Whether you visit a professional astrologer, or consult a DNA specialist, the message is heard in the same way: you are stuck with your fate. In this blog I challenge that basic assumption.

Nothing is written
I hope you have seen David Lean’s great movie masterpiece, Lawrence of Arabia? The famous First World War colonel, T.E. Lawrence (played brilliantly by Peter O’Toole), persuades his Arab followers to cross the Nefud desert in order to take the Turkish port at Aqaba from the rear. The Arabs consider the desert to be impassable, but Lawrence’ charismatic persuasion leads them onward across what is virtually a furnace of burning sand. This superhuman success is marred when Lawrence realises that one of the Arabs, Gasim, has been lost. It is assumed he has fallen from his camel and is back in the desert, with no water, dying in the heat. Lawrence insists he will go back. The Arabs are appalled that Lawrence should risk his life. They tell him ‘it is written’, it is certain Gasim would die. It must be the will of Allah. But Lawrence heads back into the desert and eventually, to the astonishment of the Arabs, he returns safely with Gasim. ‘Nothing is written’, he says. The Arab leader, Sherif Ali, played by Omar Sharif, replies: ‘Truly, for some men nothing is written unless they write it themselves.”
Choose Your Own Adventure
The freewill versus pre-determinism debate cannot be given justice in a short blog! But it is an important topic when it comes down to our sense of purpose. Can we write the story of our lives for ourselves? Over the years I have read charts for clients who often seemed to think the patterns I can identify in their birth charts are somehow cast in stone. I worked hard to make sure people left their sessions understanding they create their own destiny. So why, you might ask, bother with an astrological consultation? After all, isn’t the idea that ‘reading the stars’ will tell us what ‘fate’ has in store for us?
I suggest you take a step back and consider this: what astrologers read in your chart is a story you have written for yourself, before you were born. It is a book waiting for you to read, but you have forgotten you are the author. You planned the main themes. You invented the characters. You set the scenes and shaped the story-arc. The ‘Fates’ are a mechanism, instruments of your own Soul’s desires. Think of a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ book, in which you find a variety of choices. At the end of each chapter you decide what comes next – you choose your favourite option, based on your pre-birth vision of the life you wanted to create.
The world is your stage
Right now, you are living a human life, experiencing the ups and downs we can all expect. Joy and sorrow intertwine, said the visionary poet William Blake. Both are necessary for the life Divine. But if you recognise your own Divine capacity for creating a purposeful life, you will step into a new confidence. You will cease to feel trapped by circumstance. You will be released from the old, ill-conceived idea that this life is some kind of prison. You will discover you are like an actor, playing the main role in a drama of light and shadow. All the world’s a stage, and you and I have many exits and entrances.
We rise, we shine, we set – over and over again. This is a magical dance we choreographed for our own impatient feet. We have composed a symphony in which we can play all the instruments. We constructed a three-act play in which we are acting out all the parts…
Is it time to raise the curtain?
Write your own destiny
When Lawrence says, ‘Nothing is written’ what he really means is…
This is my life and I choose to write this chapter as a success story, in which I rescue a man who would otherwise die.”
Don’t ask “what is my life purpose?” Meditate. Spend time in stillness and silence. Give time to your inner voice, your internal ‘sat-nav’, the angel hovering close by waiting to whisper when you are willing to listen. Choose a purpose that occurs to you. Write it down in your Journal. Then it will be written and you will have written it. Do not hesitate to start living according to your choice. Although, sometimes, your past choices may have been ill-considered and led you off the path, your Soul’s secret desire will always be calling you. Your intention is the will of the Divine spark within your heart.
