We are all made of Light, but often we forget. So how can we remind ourselves and really experience our true nature?

Coloured Lights
Often students describe how they see coloured lights when they meditate. These are described as ‘photisms’, colours arising as an inner experience that has nothing to do with ordinary eyesight. In the Sufi tradition, the mystics identified the different colours that can arise on the inner screen as certain stages on the spiritual journey, and suggested that our inner ‘Man of Light’ can be experienced when seven colours unfold during our mystical journey. Each colour is also associated with a prophet – Jesus is one of the seven. Mohammed is identified as an emerald green colour. The mystic knows they are arriving at a place of illumination when they experience emerald-green as the predominant colour during their meditation.
The colours in the Man of Light are connected with subtle organs, but these are not the rainbow colours, as with chakras. However, we can see that these metaphysical ideas are based on the kind of experiences that any meditator is likely to notice during the earlier stages of their sessions. Whatever your meditation tradition you are almost bound to ‘see’ colours.
Golden Light
As our mental chatter settles down and our mindscape becomes like an empty room that had been full of furnishings, there is a great sense of freedom, as though we have stepped into a vast field of energy with no limitations. Our body begins to feel weightless. Our breathing is slowing down. There is a great sense of expansion in our chest and our mind feels open wide. This is when Light begins to flow into our whole being. This Light will be warm, glowing and golden, like sunshine. Now we know we are dipping into the Limitless Light of Divine Source. It feels like coming home. How great that is to experience every day!
How do we get back to the Light?
Some traditions – including Sufism and Yoga – describe inner process as if we are climbing a ladder, from the lower world of earthly materiality to the upper world of heavenly transcendence. The chakra system begins at the lowest bodily organs and identifies five intermediary chakras before arriving at the so-called ‘crown’.
I believe it is more useful to think in terms of expansion, rather than ascension. If you accept that your physical presence in the world is a vessel for the Light, that you are a theotokos – a god-carrier – then you are obliged to find any spiritual technology that supports you in the responsibility you have to SHINE! You need to allow the Light a clear space to expand through your everyday presence.
The yogic tradition developed as a physical practice designed to allow for unity of spirit and matter. Any physical practice that acknowledges the body as a sacred vessel for the Light will contribute to your own capacity to shine. You will be polishing the brass and cleaning the windows in your temple of Light.
Meditation every day!
Meditation twice daily, for at least twenty minutes, will allow you to slow down your metabolism and you will experience the expansion of golden Light throughout your whole physical structure. Every atom of your personal walking-talking human organism carries the Light and, during meditation, you get to know that for yourself.
