The kingdom of Water can soothe and nurture us, but it can also take our breath away and dampen our Fire.
The human body is mostly made of water, which is an essential life-giving element, alongside the air we require for breathing. We are nourished by water and, when we step into a healing pool, we feel cleansed. On the other hand, if we are lost at sea and the waves are relentless, we will drown. We may also sink into a mire – water clogged with sludge – a ‘slough of despond’. In the magical landscape of the Water element, our task is to maintain the positive qualities of Water as a clear running stream, as a bubbling brook, or as a calm lake waiting for us to bathe, where we will be soothed and rejuvenated.
Water represents our emotions and this is the intimate arena where our potential can either be nourished, or can sink like a stone. Exploring our emotional landscape is crucial, so we understand the subtle nuances that will encourage or inhibit our progress towards our true home. In astrology, emotional content – our needs, fears and anxieties – is associated with the Moon, who pulls the tides and changes from day to day. In order to maintain spiritual balance and not be constantly pushed hither and thither by our moveable emotions, we need to take time to stay centred with Fire energy, represented by the Sun.
Spiritual (Fire) and Mental (Air) elements can both be swamped by emotions (Water). We must not be tempted to override our emotional responses, otherwise we will act in the world without empathy and compassion, but we want to avoid being drawn into a deep reservoir of water where we can neither shine nor breathe. When we learn to swim, enjoying the buoyancy of emotions, and accepting the ups and downs of joys and sorrows without losing sight of our true mission in life, we shine as a ‘soul-star’, bringing light into the world.
Think of a huge swimming pool in the grounds of your house. The pool has been well maintained and it’s full of clear blue water, where you can see right down to the bottom. That is how your consciousness can be – how it once was, when you were a tiny baby. Now think of that pool being used as a dumping ground for unwanted items: children’s toys, washing that blew off the line, an old bicycle wheel, perhaps even a supermarket trolley! You need to clear any old rubbish from your personal swimming pool.
Your companions from the kingdom of Water can be very supportive, offering healing and comfort.
The kingdom of Water is the heart, and the smaller, everyday angels will tend your needs and bring opportunities for you to experience emotional support, kindness and compassion in your daily life. It is in this kingdom that your future possibilities will flourish, if they are tended and nourished with commitment, love and care.
